Catering a wake in Derby
The shape of a Derby funeral is familiar to us in a way it is not anywhere else. Service at Markeaton, then a gathering at a club, a church hall, a pub function room or the house, usually within a couple of miles. There is an hour in between and we deliver into it.
Because we have been here since 2012, a fair number of the families who ring have used us before — for a christening, a wedding, an office buffet, or the last funeral. That is not a sales point so much as a practical one: they already know what a Sadlergates buffet looks like and how much of it turns up.
The food is plain on purpose. Sandwiches cut small, sausage rolls, pork pies, quiche, and cake with the tea. What matters is that there is plenty and that whoever organised it can stop organising once we have gone.
How quickly we can do it
Forty-eight hours for a delivered buffet, and often better in Derby. Ring and we will tell you what we can genuinely hold to for your date.
Anything hot, or served by our staff, needs about a week. Say so early if that is what you want.
Delivered buffets close at 4pm the day before, with a £20 minimum. A Monday wake closes on the Friday afternoon, because the kitchen prepares on the morning of delivery.
Where we deliver around Derby
The whole city — Spondon, Alvaston, Chaddesden, Oakwood, Allestree, Darley Abbey, Mickleover, Littleover and Sinfin — and out through Borrowash, Breadsall and Duffield into the county. Delivery is free.
Crematoria, function rooms, working men's clubs, church halls, cricket and rugby clubs, and private houses. We have delivered to all of them and a house is no more difficult than a venue.
What we will ask you
The date, roughly how many, the address, and what time you need it there. That is a price on the phone.
After that: dietary requirements and how many of each, where the food is going to be set out, and who will be at the venue to let the driver in. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and halal portions are prepared separately and labelled. Tell us how many of each when you order.

How quickly can you cater a wake in Derby?

Yes, and regularly. Most families hold the gathering at a club, hall or function room a short drive away rather than at the crematorium, and those are all on our normal round.

What happens if the numbers change?
Ring and we will adjust it. Numbers moving at a funeral is normal rather than awkward, and we send slightly over as standard for exactly that reason.
Do you set up and clear away?
We set up — laid out where you want it and covered until people arrive. We do not stay for a delivered buffet, but our driver collects the platters and cool boxes the next working day.
What food is right for a funeral tea?
Sandwiches, savouries and cake. Sausage rolls, pork pies, quiche and sandwiches cut small, with cake alongside the tea. Easy to eat standing up and easy to put down.
