How a Derby hog roast works
We arrive several hours before you want to eat, a whole hog is not a quick job, and set up where you tell us. The machine needs a flat area of roughly three metres by five, ideally with no steps between it and where your guests will be, and it can sit outside under a gazebo in any weather.
The hog roasts slowly through the afternoon while your event goes on around it. When you are ready, our team carves and serves: pulled and sliced pork, crackling, stuffing and fresh bread rolls with apple chutney, mustard mayo and barbecue sauce. Silver adds coleslaw and baby roasts; Gold adds sausages on top of that.
Service usually runs about an hour for a queue of a hundred, and we stay to serve it. Afterwards we clear our own equipment and take it away.
What it costs, by guest numbers
Hog roasts are priced as a whole event rather than per head, because the hog costs what it costs whether forty people eat it or fifty. Bronze starts at £795 for up to fifty guests, Silver at £940 and Gold at £1,050. At 150 to 200 guests those become £1,450, £2,040 and £2,490.
Above two hundred we quote on the job. The full table of twenty-one prices is on the hog roast and BBQ menu, so you can find your number and see the figure without ringing anybody first.
If a hog roast is more than the occasion needs, a barbecue is £13.00 a head for The Standard, £19.50 for The Classic and £30.00 for The Premium, with a fifty-person minimum and a kids option at £8.00. All prices exclude VAT.
Where we bring it in Derby and Derbyshire
Across the city: Pride Park, Spondon, Mickleover, Littleover, Allestree, Darley Abbey, Chaddesden and Borrowash, and well out into the county towards Duffield, Belper, Ashbourne and Matlock.
Most Derby hog roasts are weddings, milestone birthdays and company summer parties, and they happen at the same handful of kinds of place: a marquee in a garden, a cricket or rugby club, a village hall with a field, a farm venue, or one of the hotels. All of them work, provided there is somewhere flat to set up and a route to it that does not involve carrying equipment up steps.
Booking one
Tell us the date, the venue and roughly how many guests, and we will confirm whether we have a machine and a team free. Summer Saturdays go months ahead, so if you have a date in June, July or August it is worth asking early.
A hog roast is booked as an event and quoted on the job. The 4pm buffet cut-off and the £20 buffet minimum have nothing to do with it. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and halal portions are prepared separately and labelled. Tell us how many of each when you book.

What Derby customers say
4.9 out of 5 from 210+ Google reviews
Sadlergates provided us with a cold buffet for 12 people at a holiday cottage. The meal was delivered on time by a very friendly driver. All of the food was of an excellent standard with plenty of variety. The gluten-free food was also very much appreciated.
Trevor · Cold buffet at a holiday cottage
We received a sample buffet at our workplace and were very happy. The food and variety was fantastic. The ham is so good… Details have been shared around Disability Direct, and we will be ordering in the future.
Sarah · Office buffet
A huge thank you to Ryan and Elize for looking after the catering for our daughter’s wedding! Excellent service from start to finish. The food was lovely and everyone at the wedding commented on how nice it was. Plenty of food also for all.

Hog roast catering in Derby, your questions answered
How much does a hog roast cost in Derby?
From £795 for the Bronze package up to fifty guests. Silver is £940 and Gold £1,050 at that size. At 150 to 200 guests the three become £1,450, £2,040 and £2,490. The full table of prices by guest number is on the hog roast and BBQ menu. Prices exclude VAT.
How many people does a hog feed?
Our packages are banded up to 50, 80, 100, 120, 150 and 200 guests, and we size the hog to the band you book. Above 200 we quote on the job, usually with more than one hog. As a rule nobody goes without. The bands are set so there is enough for seconds.
What happens if it rains?
The roast goes ahead. The machine sits under a gazebo we bring with us and the team works under cover, so British weather does not cancel anything. What does matter is where your guests will eat: worth having somewhere indoors or a marquee for them, not for us.
How much space do you need?
About three metres by five for the gazebo and the machine, on flat ground, with no steps between where we park and where we set up. A garden, a car park or a field all work. Tell us about the access when you book and we will flag anything difficult.
How long before the event do you arrive?
Several hours. A whole hog needs a long slow roast, so we are usually on site well before your guests. We will agree an arrival time with the venue when you book.
What do vegetarians and vegans eat?
We provide separate vegetarian and vegan options prepared away from the hog, and they are labelled. Tell us how many of each when you book. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and halal portions are prepared separately and labelled. Tell us how many of each when you book.
Do you serve the food or leave it out?
We serve it. Our team carves and plates for your guests rather than leaving a tray on a table, which is both better food and a much better queue. Afterwards we clear our own equipment away.
How far in advance should I book a hog roast?
As early as you can for a summer Saturday, June to August books months ahead. Midweek and off-season dates are far easier and we can often help at shorter notice. Ring the Derby office and we will tell you what is free.
