Catering a wake in Mansfield
A funeral tea is not an event anybody plans in advance, and it is usually arranged in the same few days as everything else. Most of the families who ring us have a date from the funeral director, a rough number in their head, and a venue they have not seen since the last time somebody died. What they need is somebody who will answer the phone, give them a price, and turn up.
We have catered wakes in Mansfield for over a decade, and the shape of it rarely changes. The service is at Mansfield and District Crematorium on Derby Road, and the gathering afterwards is at a pub, a club, a village hall or the house. There is usually an hour between the two. We deliver into that hour, set the food out, and leave.
The food itself is deliberately plain: sandwiches cut small, sausage rolls, pork pies, quiche, and cake with the tea. This is not the occasion for anything clever. What matters is that there is enough of it, that it looks like somebody took care over it, and that the person who organised it can put the tray down and talk to their relatives.
How quickly we can do it
Forty-eight hours is the honest answer for a sandwich buffet, and we can often do better than that. Ring the office and we will tell you what we can hold to for your date rather than promising something and hoping — a wake is the one booking where being let down is unforgivable.
Anything hot, or anything with staff serving on the day, needs longer. A hog roast or a served hot buffet is a week at minimum, and in practice most families are not looking for that. If you are, say so on the phone and we will tell you honestly whether the date works.
The buffet cut-off is 4pm the day before, with a £20 minimum on the order value. A Monday wake closes at 4pm on the Friday, because the kitchen prepares on the morning of delivery and nobody is in over the weekend.
Where we deliver in and around Mansfield
Mansfield itself, Mansfield Woodhouse, Forest Town, Rainworth, Clipstone, Warsop and Bilsthorpe, and across into Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield on the way back towards our kitchen.
Delivery is free across all of it. We deliver to crematoria, to function rooms, to working men's clubs, to village halls and to houses — a private address is no harder than a venue, and quite often it is where the family would rather be.
What we will ask you
Four things: the date, roughly how many people, where it is going, and what time you want it there. That is enough to give you a price on the phone.
After that it is worth telling us about any dietary requirements and how many of each, whether there is somewhere to put the food when we arrive, and whether anyone will be there to let us in. If the venue is locked until after the service, tell us and we will work out the timings with you rather than leaving a driver on a doorstep.

Why Mansfield chooses us
Twelve miles away
We can usually take an order on the Tuesday for the Thursday. Ring and tell us the numbers and the time, and that is the arrangement made.
We set up and go
The food is laid out, covered and ready before the cars are back. Our driver does not stay, does not need directing, and collects the empty platters the next working day so nobody has to think about returning anything.
Numbers can move
Nobody knows exactly how many will come back. Tell us your best guess and we will send a little over; if the number changes the day before, ring the office and we will change it.
Diets handled quietly
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and halal portions are made separately and labelled, so nobody has to ask across a room what is in a sandwich.
What our customers say

Booked Sadlergates for my husband’s 50th birthday — The Hog Roast (we went with the Gold package). The team (Will, Ryan and Vickie) were all absolutely fantastic — friendly and professional whilst having a laugh with us! The food was completely outstanding, and every single guest commented on how incredible it was.
Shel · 50th birthday hog roast, Nottingham
Fantastic food and service from Sadlergates Catering Nottingham for a Celebration of Life event. They were so lovely to deal with and there were many compliments about the sandwich buffet on the day. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them for catering an event.
Hester · Celebration of life, Nottingham
Sadlergate were outstanding from start to finish when catering our Christmas event. The festive buffet was of a very high standard providing three different meats and also veggie options. Shaun and Vicky were incredible throughout the evening, ensuring everything ran seamlessly and taking care of every detail.

Funeral catering in Mansfield — your questions answered
How quickly can you cater a wake in Mansfield?
Usually within 48 hours for a sandwich buffet. Ring the office with your date and we will tell you straight away whether we can do it rather than taking the booking and hoping. Hot food served by our staff needs about a week.
What happens if the numbers change on the day?
Tell us as soon as you know. Numbers moving is normal at a funeral and we would far rather adjust the order than have you worry about it. We also tend to send slightly over on a wake for exactly this reason.
Can you deliver straight to the venue?
Yes, and that is what most families choose. We deliver to function rooms, clubs, village halls, crematoria and private houses across Mansfield. Tell us the address and the time and somebody needs to be there to let the driver in.
Do you set up and clear away?
We set up. The food arrives on platters, is laid out where you want it and covered until people arrive. We do not stay for a delivered buffet — but our driver collects the platters and cool boxes the next working day, so there is nothing to return and nothing to wash.
What food is appropriate for a funeral tea?
Sandwiches, savouries and cake is the traditional answer and still the right one. Sausage rolls, pork pies, quiche and sandwiches cut small, with cake alongside the tea. It should be easy to eat standing up and easy to put down when somebody comes over to talk.
How much food should I order for a wake?
One buffet portion per person, and order for slightly more people than you expect. Wakes are the hardest catering to count for because people who did not attend the service often come to the gathering. If you are unsure, tell us your number on the phone and we will suggest what we would send.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and halal portions are prepared separately and labelled clearly, so nobody has to ask across a room what is in something. Tell us how many of each when you order.
How much does funeral catering cost in Mansfield?
From £5.50 a head for sandwiches, £7.70 for sandwiches and savouries, and £9.40 for the fuller spread with crisps, fruit and cake. Delivery is free across Mansfield and there is a £20 minimum on the order. All prices exclude VAT.
