Catering a wake in Chesterfield
Almost every Chesterfield funeral we cater follows the same shape. The service is at Chesterfield and District Crematorium on Chesterfield Road in Brimington, and the gathering afterwards is at a club, a hotel, a village hall or the family's house. There is an hour between the two, and that hour is when we deliver.
What families ask for here is consistent: sandwiches cut small, sausage rolls, pork pies, quiche, and cake with the tea. Plain, generous, easy to eat standing up, and enough of it that nobody feels they have to hold back. This is not the occasion for anything clever, and we do not try to make it one.
The practical difficulty at a wake is never the food, it is the timing. Somebody has to be at the venue to let the driver in, and that somebody is usually at the crematorium. Tell us on the phone who will be there and when, and we will work the delivery around it rather than leaving a driver on a locked doorstep with a car full of sandwiches.
How quickly we can do it
Forty-eight hours is the honest answer for a delivered sandwich buffet, and we can often do better. We would rather tell you no on the phone than take a booking we cannot keep — a wake is the one job where letting a family down is unforgivable.
Anything hot, or anything with our staff serving on the day, needs about a week. Most families are not asking for that, but if you are, say so early and we will be straight with you about the date.
The cut-off for a delivered buffet is 4pm the day before, with a £20 minimum on the order value. A Monday wake closes at 4pm on the Friday, because the kitchen prepares on the morning of delivery.

What we will ask you
The date, roughly how many people, the address it is going to and what time you want it there. That is enough for a price on the phone.
Then it helps to know about dietary requirements and how many of each, whether there is a table or a bar to set the food out on, and who will be at the venue to let us in. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and halal portions are prepared separately and labelled. Tell us how many of each when you order.

We set up. The food is laid out where you want it and covered until people arrive. We do not stay for a delivered buffet, but our driver collects the platters and cool boxes the next working day so there is nothing to wash or return.
What food is right for a funeral tea?
Sandwiches, savouries and cake. Sausage rolls, pork pies, quiche and sandwiches cut small, with cake alongside the tea. It should be easy to eat standing and easy to put down when somebody comes over to talk.
How much food should I order?
One buffet portion per person, ordered for slightly more people than you expect. If you are unsure, tell us your number on the phone and we will tell you what we would send.
